Bagas Porthia plays a variety of tunes and songs for dancing and listening. For those who can't wait to get on their feet our dance leaders can guide you in the Nos Lowen style, which includes serpent and circle formations for individuals and processional and non-formation dances for couples. Our dances are very easy to follow, are suitable for all ages and abilities and don't require a caller.
The tunes featured are a small sample of our wide repertoire ...
Quay Fair - origin unknown but played at the Golowan Festival since the 1990s and known by many, this perky little tune quickly gets people on their feet.
Bodmin Riding - another well known tune which dates back to at least 1864 but is still very much part of the living tradition. Heard regularly at festivals and celebrations in Cornwall, this is also known as the St Ives Well Processional and is played each year at St Ives Feast Day in February.
A trio of Cornish Waltzes ... we first heard them played by Jim Pengelly and Asterveryn and the three tunes worked so well together we decided to include them in our own repertoire..
Can Jack - Jack's song from Robert Morton Nance's "Cledry Plays"
Mowes Yseldyryow (The Dutch Girl) - collected by Morton Nance, by Merv Davey in 1980 and also believed by Jim Pengelly to have been played by Arthur Biddick
Daras An Skyber (The Barn Door) - collected by Merv Davey from Arthur Biddick but also thought to be from the repertoire of the Boscastle Band, formed 1876, reformed after WW1 by Bill Hocken and disbanded in 1973
Fer Lyskeris (Liskeard Fair) - we play the version for dancing which evolved in the mid 1970s. An earlier, slightly longer version from the late 1890s is still retained in the tradition in the Tamar valley
Say You Love Me - a lively love song thought to have originated from America and recorded by the Sharon Shannon band, this song has been in our repertoire right from the start and is always a joy to play and sing.
"Lovely tunes drifting across the harbour, perfect for a sunny summer afternoon" - Mousehole Sea Salts & Sail
"What a great night! People were up and dancing right from the start while others sat & listened to the wonderful Cornish music" - HeylFest
"Thanks Dee - it was perfect" - Treloyhan Manor Hotel, St Ives
